The Lagos State Sports Commission has unveiled plans to transform and promote rugby across the state through grassroots development, targeting primary and secondary schools as well as local communities.
Eko Hot News reports that the Director-General of the Commission, Lekan Fatodu, disclosed this during the final of an invitational rugby tournament organised by the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation in collaboration with Hombre Sports and the British Rugby School, with support from the state government.

Represented by the Director of Sports Development, Nunayon Travih, Fatodu explained that the initiative aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus agenda, which prioritises youth engagement through sports and education.
He emphasised that the Commission is committed to integrating rugby into school systems, ensuring that young people are exposed to the sport early and can develop their talents alongside academic pursuits.
According to him, plans are underway to partner with the British Rugby School in Lagos to expand access to rugby, encourage inter-school competitions, and create platforms for young athletes to compete and grow.

Also speaking, General Manager of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation, Azeez Ladipo, said the tournament was designed to provide consistent game time for domestic players, a key factor in improving performance and sustaining the sport.
He revealed that the federation is working on a structured competition framework that will feature multiple circuits across Lagos and Delta, ensuring continuity and long-term development of rugby in Nigeria.
The competition also served as a precursor to the upcoming Lagos Sevens tournament expected later in the year, which will feature more teams and expanded participation.

In the male category final, Barewa Rugby Team from Kano defeated Cowrie Rugby Team from Lagos 19–0 to emerge champions, while AJ Sharks of Lagos secured a 5–0 victory over Barewa female team in the women’s category.
The event attracted international attention, with French rugby Olympian, Aaron Grandidier, присутствing to mentor and inspire young players.
The Lagos State Sports Commission reiterated its commitment to grassroots sports development, noting that expanding opportunities beyond traditional sports like football will help nurture well-rounded athletes and drive growth in the sector.
