The Lagos State Government has constituted a Technical Recovery and Demolition Committee to oversee the safe demolition of a fire-ravaged 23-storey building in the state.
Eko Hot News reports that the decision followed a detailed safety assessment, which confirmed that the structure has become unstable and poses serious risks to lives and surrounding properties.
The building, identified as the former Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) complex, was severely damaged by fire, prompting emergency evaluations by relevant regulatory and safety agencies.
According to the state government, the committee will be responsible for planning and executing a controlled demolition process that complies with engineering, environmental, and public safety standards.
Officials said the demolition exercise will involve experienced professionals to prevent secondary damage, manage debris effectively, and minimise disruption to nearby businesses and residents.
The government stressed that public safety remains its top priority, noting that no structure deemed unsafe will be allowed to stay
standing within Lagos communities.
Authorities also disclosed that the committee will work closely with emergency services, traffic management officials, and environmental agencies throughout the demolition period.
Residents and business owners in the vicinity have been advised to cooperate with officials and adhere strictly to safety guidelines that will be issued ahead of the demolition.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing building regulations and holding developers accountable to prevent similar incidents in the future.
