The commissioner noted that the carnival represents a living expression of Afro-Brazilian heritage. She added that the event connects generations through music, dance, costumes, and storytelling.

The 2026 edition will take place at Tafawa Balewa Square, a historic venue expected to attract thousands of residents, tourists, and culture enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond.

Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka emphasised the economic value of the carnival. She explained that such cultural events boost local businesses, support creatives, and strengthen Lagos’ global tourism profile.

Referencing the Eyo Festival, she noted that previous cultural celebrations have contributed significantly to economic activity and global visibility for the state.

She added that the Ministry is focused on promoting cultural tourism as a driver of growth, social connection, and international recognition for Lagos.

Providing historical context, Remi Da Costa explained that the carnival traces its roots to 19th-century Afro-Brazilian returnees who brought rich traditions to Lagos.

He highlighted that the festival’s heritage reflects a blend of Brazilian and Yoruba influences. He also noted that the term “Fanti” is linked to the Portuguese word “Fantasia,” meaning fantasy.
