Wahab stressed the critical importance of safeguarding water resources, describing water as essential to life, public health, and sustainable development. He noted that this year’s theme highlights the need to empower women and girls in water management while ensuring equitable access to safe water.

The Commissioner also raised concerns over the global water crisis, revealing that more than 2.1 billion people worldwide still lack access to safe and clean water, underscoring the urgency for improved water governance and public awareness.

Speaking on initiatives within the state, Wahab disclosed that the Lagos State Government is implementing strategic measures to boost water supply, including the rehabilitation of existing waterworks, investment in new infrastructure, and partnerships aimed at attracting technical expertise and funding.

He added that the state is working towards a target of ensuring access to clean water for all households in Lagos by 2027, a move expected to significantly improve living standards.

The government is also focused on reducing dependence on alternative water sources such as boreholes and wells, while encouraging residents to adopt responsible water usage practices.

Wahab urged Lagosians to play an active role by conserving water and supporting policies that promote sustainable water management, noting that collective action remains key to addressing the challenge.

As Lagos continues to grow rapidly, experts warn that water conservation will be crucial in preventing future shortages and ensuring long-term sustainability.
