LASG Strengthens Fiscal Governance, Deepens ICAN Collaboration

 The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to robust fiscal management and professional partnerships with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

Eko Hot News reports that the announcement came during a courtesy visit by ICAN President, Mallam Haruna Nma Yahaya, mni, PhD, FCA, and members to the newly appointed Accountant-General of Lagos State, Dr. Muyiwa John Adetola, FCA, at his office on Monday.

Dr. Adetola commended ICAN-certified accountants in the Lagos State Public Service, noting that their competence has contributed to the stability and resilience of the State’s financial architecture. He highlighted timely preparation and presentation of financial statements as evidence of effective fiscal management.

He emphasised transparency, accountability, and adherence to global best practices in public finance, stating these principles are crucial to sustaining Lagos State’s economic growth. He further assured that the government would continue strengthening financial systems and processes for prudent resource management.

The Accountant-General also stressed that collaboration with ICAN would enhance capacity building, professional ethics, and continuous training for accounting personnel across the Public Service.

He described the partnership as key to maintaining institutional efficiency.

ICAN President Mallam Haruna Nma Yahaya congratulated Dr. Adetola on his appointment, praising Lagos State as a leader in financial management and governance.

He reiterated ICAN’s readiness to provide advisory services, training, and capacity development programs to support the State Government.

Yahaya commended Dr. Adetola’s previous tenure as Auditor-General of Lagos State, noting it earned him widespread respect within the accounting profession.

He described the new appointment as recognition of decades of dedication, integrity, and commitment to fiscal responsibility.

The ICAN President proposed initiatives to deepen collaboration, including the ICAN Accountability Index (ICAN-A), a tool designed to promote best practices in public financial management across government institutions.

He also suggested structured capacity-building programs to enhance the technical expertise of Lagos State finance officers, focusing on emerging global standards in public sector accounting, financial reporting, and fiscal management.

Dr. Adetola assured that the State Government would implement strategies to sustain strong financial governance while leveraging ICAN’s expertise to improve the efficiency and professionalism of public finance operations.
