Officials from China and the United States have discussed the possibility of establishing a bilateral working mechanism aimed at strengthening cooperation in trade and investment. The discussions come ahead of a planned visit by US President Donald Trump to Beijing later this month.

Eko Hot News reports that the discussions were part of ongoing economic and trade consultations currently taking place in Paris, France. The talks aim to strengthen economic ties and explore ways to promote stable trade relations between the two global economies.

According to China’s international trade representative, Li Chenggang, both sides held extensive and constructive exchanges during the discussions. Speaking at a press briefing, he noted that the dialogue was candid and focused on building stronger economic cooperation between the two countries.

The consultations are being led by Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The meeting represents the sixth round of economic and trade discussions between China and the United States.

The three-day talks began on Sunday in the French capital and are expected to cover several areas of economic collaboration. Officials are reviewing policies that could improve trade flows and encourage investment between the two countries.

Previous rounds of negotiations were held in several international cities, including Geneva, London, Stockholm, Madrid, and Kuala Lumpur. These meetings have helped address trade concerns and improve dialogue between the two governments.

Observers note that earlier discussions contributed to adjustments in tariff policies that had previously reached high levels. The ongoing consultations aim to further stabilise economic relations and support long-term trade cooperation.

During the briefing, Li Chenggang emphasised that stable economic and trade relations between China and the United States are beneficial not only to both countries but also to the global economy. Strengthening cooperation, he said, can help support international trade stability.

He also reiterated China’s long-standing position regarding Section 301 investigations conducted by the United States. According to Li, Beijing continues to express concerns about unilateral investigations that affect international trade practices.

The United States recently announced a Section 301 investigation examining alleged labour-related practices among several trading partners. The review includes countries such as Canada, China, Mexico, and members of the European Union.

The discussions in Paris are taking place as global markets monitor developments affecting international trade and energy supply chains. Economic policymakers from both countries are expected to evaluate how global developments could influence trade cooperation.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit China between March 31 and April 2. The visit is expected to include discussions with Chinese leadership on economic collaboration and broader international issues.

However, reports indicate that the US president has suggested the possibility of adjusting the timing of the meeting. According to comments made to the Financial Times, Trump has encouraged China to support efforts aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.

Analysts say continued dialogue between China and the United States remains important for maintaining stability in global trade. As the world’s largest economies, cooperation between the two nations often influences broader economic trends.

The Paris consultations are expected to conclude with further discussions on strengthening economic engagement and expanding opportunities for trade and investment between the two countries.
