The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening academic development in Nigeria through the promotion and distribution of locally authored textbooks for tertiary institutions.
Eko Hot News reports that 72 academic textbooks sponsored by TETFund and written by Nigerian scholars were recently presented as part of efforts to support teaching, research, and knowledge development in the country’s higher education sector.
In addition to the 72 titles, ten more academic books were secured for distribution to universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across Nigeria.
The initiative is part of the TETFund Higher Education Book Development Intervention, which focuses on supporting indigenous academic publishing.
Education stakeholders say the programme is designed to encourage Nigerian scholars to contribute more actively to global knowledge through research and publication.
Officials noted that locally authored textbooks help ensure that learning materials reflect Nigeria’s realities, experiences, and academic strengths.
The intervention also supports the production of quality academic resources that are relevant to students and lecturers within the Nigerian education system.

Through this initiative, TETFund aims to reduce dependence on foreign textbooks that may not always address local academic and societal contexts.
Experts in the education sector have long emphasised the importance of developing indigenous learning materials that highlight Nigerian scholarship.
They believe that promoting academic publications written by Nigerian scholars will strengthen the country’s intellectual contributions on the global stage.
The programme also provides opportunities for researchers and academics to publish their work and share their expertise with a wider audience.
Officials noted that the newly presented textbooks cover a variety of disciplines across the tertiary education system.
These resources are expected to support classroom learning, academic research, and curriculum development within higher education institutions.
Education leaders say improved access to relevant textbooks can significantly enhance the quality of teaching and learning.
The initiative also demonstrates the role of strategic partnerships in strengthening Nigeria’s knowledge economy.

TETFund acknowledged the contributions of scholars, publishers, and other stakeholders who worked together to produce the academic materials.
Their collective efforts, officials noted, continue to enrich the intellectual landscape of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
The organisation also expressed appreciation to the Executive Secretary of TETFund for supporting initiatives that promote academic excellence.
Observers say the development highlights the importance of investing in education as a pathway to national development.
They added that strengthening local academic publishing helps promote cultural understanding and knowledge that is rooted in local experiences.
The distribution of the textbooks is expected to support thousands of students and lecturers across Nigeria’s higher institutions.
Education stakeholders believe the initiative will encourage further research, innovation, and academic collaboration among Nigerian scholars.
By promoting indigenous scholarship, TETFund continues to play an important role in advancing quality education and academic development across Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
