A tragic road accident along the Oworonsoki-Apapa Expressway has claimed the life of a female passenger and left six others injured after a commercial bus lost control near New Castle Bus Stop in Lagos.

Eko Hot News reports that the incident occurred inward Gbagada and involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number LSD 654 XY.

The spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the development in a statement released on Sunday.

According to Taofiq, the crash happened when the commercial bus reportedly veered off the road and rammed into a roadside culvert along the busy expressway.

He explained that the impact of the collision caused a female passenger to be thrown out of the vehicle onto the expressway.

Taofiq added that an articulated trailer approaching the area was unable to stop in time and passed over the passenger.

The development resulted in the immediate death of the victim at the scene of the accident.

Six other occupants of the bus, including the driver, sustained injuries of varying degrees during the incident.

Officials said some of the injured passengers reportedly suffered fractures and were provided immediate assistance.

Emergency response officials quickly arrived at the scene to support rescue operations and attend to the victims.

LASTMA officers also worked to secure the accident location and manage traffic around the area.

The swift response helped prevent additional incidents along the busy corridor while emergency teams attended to the injured passengers.

Authorities ensured that the injured victims were transported to nearby medical facilities for further treatment and care.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased passenger.

He also wished the injured victims a quick recovery following the unfortunate incident.

Bakare-Oki commended the prompt actions of LASTMA personnel and other emergency responders who supported the rescue operation.

He emphasised the importance of responsible driving and adherence to road safety regulations by all road users.

According to him, maintaining safe driving practices remains essential in preventing avoidable road accidents on busy highways.

The LASTMA boss also encouraged motorists to ensure that their vehicles are properly maintained before embarking on journeys.

Road safety advocates have repeatedly highlighted the need for drivers to remain alert and cautious, especially on major expressways with heavy traffic movement.

They also encourage passengers to remain safety conscious and support efforts aimed at promoting responsible driving behaviour.

The Oworonsoki-Apapa Expressway remains one of the busiest transport corridors in Lagos, connecting several parts of the city.

Traffic officials often monitor the route to ensure smooth movement of vehicles and prompt response to incidents.

Residents and commuters along the corridor have also called for continuous road safety awareness campaigns to reduce traffic incidents.

They noted that public education on safe driving habits can contribute significantly to improving road safety.

Authorities continue to encourage drivers to follow traffic regulations and remain attentive while driving.

Road users are also advised to maintain safe speeds and observe caution, particularly around bus stops and busy intersections.

Officials say continued cooperation between motorists, passengers and traffic agencies is necessary to maintain safer roads across Lagos State.
