The Lagos State Government has hailed the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, following his posthumous recognition with the prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, marking a historic milestone for African music.
Eko Hot News reports that the award was conferred on January 31, 2026, at the Grammy Special Merit Awards held in Los Angeles, United States, making Fela Anikulapo-Kuti the first African artist to receive the global honour.
The award was received on behalf of the legendary musician by his children, Yeni, Femi, Kunle, and Shalewa Kuti, representing the family at the ceremony.
Reacting to the recognition, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, described the honour as a proud moment for Lagos State, Nigeria, and the African continent, noting that it underscores Fela’s lasting global influence.
She stated that the award reaffirms Lagos’ position as the cultural heartbeat of Africa and a fertile ground for nurturing creative talents whose impact resonates worldwide.
The Commissioner emphasised that the Ministry remains committed to preserving Fela’s legacy by supporting the arts, strengthening creative industries, and advancing cultural diplomacy to showcase Lagos’ rich heritage on the global stage.
According to her, Fela’s music remains timeless, serving as a powerful voice against military dictatorship, corruption, social injustice, and oppression, while amplifying African narratives and identity across generations.
Mrs Benson-Awoyinka noted that nearly three decades after his passing, Fela’s artistic courage and social consciousness continue to inspire musicians, activists, and cultural enthusiasts globally.
In their reaction, the Kuti family described the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award as a symbolic honour that bridges generations, while reflecting the growing global appreciation of African music and culture.
They expressed gratitude to the Recording Academy and supporters worldwide for recognising Fela’s enduring contributions to music, culture, and global social discourse.
