The Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB) has convened the first-ever Joint Leadership Dialogue aimed at repositioning Primary Health Care (PHC) delivery across Lagos State.
Eko Hot News reports that the historic engagement brought together the Chairmen of Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), alongside key health sector stakeholders, in a unified effort to strengthen grassroots healthcare.
The dialogue marked a major step toward reaffirming PHC as the foundation of an accessible, responsive, and people-centred health system in Lagos.
Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Health, Hon. Musbau Lawal, described PHC as the bedrock of effective healthcare delivery.

He commended sustained investments by the state, LSPHCB, and local governments in constructing, rehabilitating, and equipping PHC facilities.
Hon. Lawal stressed that infrastructure must be supported by good governance, adequate staffing, essential equipment, security, and political will.
Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, described the dialogue as timely and strategic.

He noted that bringing all local government executives together underscored the critical role of grassroots leadership in achieving long-term health goals.
Prof. Abayomi highlighted that key universal health coverage indicators fall largely under local government responsibility.

He called for stronger alignment, accountability, and deliberate investment in PHC services.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to revitalising PHC under the THEMES Plus Agenda.

She urged council chairmen to meet counterpart funding obligations and ensure transparency in resource management.
Permanent Secretary of LSPHCB, Dr Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, described the dialogue as a call to leadership and action.

He emphasised that PHC is the closest link between the government and citizens.
Dr Mustafa noted that visible local leadership improves outcomes, boosts morale, and builds community trust.

He reaffirmed LSPHCB’s commitment to technical leadership, coordination, and oversight.
At the end of the dialogue, council chairmen unanimously resolved to strengthen collaboration with LSPHCB.
They pledged commitment to delivering equitable and sustainable PHC services across Lagos State.
