The Lagos State Government (LASG) has announced plans to introduce electric-powered boats into the Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) fleet to improve affordability, sustainability, and environmental safety of water transportation across the state.
Eko Hot News reports that the initiative was disclosed by the Managing Director of LAGFERRY, Hon. Abdoulbaq Ladi-Balogun, during the agency’s third annual Ignite Lagos event themed “Light the Waterways”, held at the Five Cowries Terminal, Ikoyi.
Balogun explained that electric boats come with lower operating and maintenance costs, which will enable the state-owned ferry operator to reduce fares for daily commuters using the waterways.
He described the move as both an environmental responsibility and an economic necessity for Lagos, noting that the megacity continues to face severe traffic congestion and rising transportation costs.
According to the LAGFERRY boss, the agency has ferried a total of 4.4 million passengers since operations began on February 4, 2020, highlighting the growing acceptance of water transportation among residents.

He revealed that more Lagosians are increasingly adopting what he described as the “Watermania Lifestyle,” with commuters leaving their cars at jetties and terminals to travel by boat.
Balogun said the steady rise in daily passenger traffic across Lagos waterways reflects growing confidence in ferry services as a reliable alternative to road transport.
He further disclosed that LAGFERRY recorded its busiest festive season during the 2025 Detty December period.
According to him, ferry trips increased by tenfold during the period as residents relied heavily on waterways to access beach houses and coastal resorts.
He attributed the sustained growth in patronage to the agency’s strict adherence to safety and security standards, which continues to strengthen public trust.
Balogun reaffirmed LASG’s commitment to expanding water transport infrastructure and modernising ferry operations to meet the mobility needs of Lagos residents.
