Whitesands School, Lekki, participated in the Inclusive Chess Day, themed “Every Child Deserves a Move,” an event designed to promote disability inclusion through sports and intellectual engagement.

Eko Hot News reports that the programme was organized through a collaborative partnership involving Vulpes Inclusive Engagement, the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), and Chess in the Slum Africa.

The initiative focused on raising awareness, encouraging participation, and creating equal opportunities for children living with disabilities across Lagos State.

Speaking at the event, the General Manager of LASODA, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting impactful initiatives that advance conversations and actions around disability inclusion.

She noted that partnerships with purpose-driven organizations remain key to building a more inclusive Lagos.

The organiser, Onyinye Atunaya, described the Inclusive Chess Day as a celebration of children with disabilities and a platform to demonstrate that inclusion can be effectively promoted through intellectual games.

She explained that chess allows every child to think, compete, and excel, irrespective of physical or cognitive challenges.

A major highlight of the programme was the interactive chess session facilitated by Tunde Onakoya and his team from Chess in the Slum Africa.

The facilitators engaged the children in hands-on activities that encouraged confidence, strategic thinking, and teamwork in an inclusive environment.

Participants, parents, and stakeholders applauded the initiative, describing it as inspiring and impactful. Many noted that the event created a safe and welcoming space where children with disabilities felt recognized, valued, and empowered.
