U.S. President Donald Trump has issued the first vetoes of his second term, rejecting two bipartisan bills passed by Congress with broad support. The move affects legislation aimed at funding a major water project in Colorado and expanding tribal land in Florida.

Eko Hot News reports that the first veto targeted the Finish the Arkansas Valley Conduit Act, which sought to provide clean drinking water to rural communities in southeastern Colorado. The bill had passed both chambers of Congress by voice vote, signalling strong bipartisan approval. Trump argued that the project had become too costly and delayed, stating the administration is focused on preventing federal taxpayers from funding “expensive and unreliable policies.”

The second veto involved the Miccosukee Reserved Area Amendments Act, which would have expanded land controlled by the Miccosukee Tribe in the Florida Everglades, including the Osceola Camp area. Trump’s veto message criticised the tribe for opposing aspects of his immigration policies and asserted that the administration would not fund “special interests” challenging federal policy.

Lawmakers have expressed mixed reactions. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R‑Colo.), sponsor of the pipeline bill, called the veto disappointing, while Colorado Democratic senators, including Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper, criticised the decision as partisan retaliation that could harm rural communities.

It remains unclear whether Congress will attempt to override the vetoes, a process that requires a two‑thirds majority in both the House and Senate. Political analysts predict a challenging path for any override effort given the contentious nature of the bills.
