The Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, has commended Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, for her lasting contributions to education through the Spelling Bee competition. The programme, now in its 21st edition, continues to inspire academic excellence and leadership skills among pupils across Lagos public schools.

Eko Hot News reports that the Junior Category of the competition, organised by the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) in collaboration with the New Era Foundation, began with pupils from various local government areas showcasing their spelling prowess. Alli-Balogun, represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, praised the initiative for producing outstanding young leaders, including former One-Day Governors.
The Commissioner highlighted that the 21st edition promises an even more competitive experience for participants, noting the sustained support of successive First Ladies, including Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu. LASUBEB Board Member, Hon. Babatunde Adewale, also lauded the programme for promoting literacy, confidence, and resilience among learners.


Dr. Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, Chairman of the Organising Committee, stressed that the Spelling Bee improves language skills, diction, and academic performance, aligning with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda on Education, Technology, and Social Inclusion.
The Junior Category concluded with Master Yusuf Yusuf of Community Primary School, Oke-Odo, winning first place. Master Raphael Ntoliba of Olomu Primary School, Ajah, and Master Monday Joshua of Muslim Mission Primary School, Oworonshoki, took second and third places. The competition will continue with the grand finale for secondary school students on December 3, 2025.
