The Trump administration has announced major changes affecting Green Card holders and applicants, introducing stricter vetting procedures and a new biometric entry-exit system for all non-U.S. citizens.

Eko Hot News reports that a review of Green Cards issued to citizens from 19 countries has been ordered following the shooting of two National Guard members by an Afghan national near the White House. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has temporarily suspended asylum adjudications as part of the re-examination of past vetting and approval processes. The administration cited national security concerns tied to previous screening procedures.

Experts say the review could result in delays, additional document requests, or changes in status for some Green Card holders. Officials are expected to scrutinise criminal history, verify eligibility for Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) programs, and examine documentation for inconsistencies. “Individuals from the affected countries may be required to provide biometrics, attend supplemental interviews, and meet enhanced evidentiary requirements,” said Morgan Bailey, immigration expert and former DHS official.

A second significant change comes on December 26, when the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will enforce a new biometric entry-exit rule. U.S. Customs and Border Protection will collect biometric data—including fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs—from all non-U.S. citizens, including lawful permanent residents, at all ports of entry and exit. This expansion removes previous exemptions and aims to track travel records comprehensively, affecting future immigration processes such as naturalisation or permanent residency status.

Immigration advocates and attorneys have criticised the policy, warning of discriminatory impacts on refugees and asylum seekers. Lisa Sherman Luna, Executive Director of the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, called the halt on processing over 200,000 refugees “another discriminatory move” and urged public opposition.

Trump, speaking on Truth Social, asserted the measures are necessary to curb migration from “Third World Countries” and restore integrity to the U.S. immigration system. DHS officials emphasised that the re-examination is intended to ensure all Green Card holders meet strict security standards.

Green Card holders, particularly those from the 19 countries under review, are advised to ensure all documentation is complete and consistent in anticipation of additional verification requests. DHS and USCIS guidance on the new procedures is expected in the coming weeks.
