The Lagos State Government has introduced fresh measures to enhance the capacity of its Vehicle Inspection Officers, reinforcing its ongoing reforms within the transportation sector.
Eko Hot News reports that 35 senior Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) from the Lagos Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) have commenced a two-day leadership and conflict-management masterclass at the agency’s headquarters in Ojodu-Berger. The training, according to officials, is part of the state’s strategic effort to deepen professionalism, enhance productivity, and build an emotionally intelligent workforce capable of delivering top-tier public service.
The capacity-building programmer focuses on several core areas, including personal effectiveness, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, communication skills, and professional conduct—competencies deemed critical for officers who regularly interface with the motoring public. The exercise also aims to boost morale within the service and equip participants with modern administrative skills needed to manage emerging challenges on Lagos roads.
Speaking at the opening session, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, urged the officers to embrace self-awareness as a tool for self-improvement. He emphasized that understanding one’s personality, strengths, and shortcomings is essential for any officer entrusted with public responsibility. Giwa noted that VIOs often encounter emotionally charged situations, and maintaining calmness, patience, and professionalism is not only a requirement but an expectation of the Lagos State Government.
He stressed that emotional control—especially when dealing with motorists—is a key ingredient for building public trust. According to him, officers must demonstrate restraint and fairness, even under pressure, as their conduct directly reflects the standards of the state. Giwa added that the training would help officers manage difficult scenarios with confidence, improve decision-making, and uphold the highest ethical standards in the discharge of their duties.
The Special Adviser also assured participants that the administration remains committed to improving their welfare. He highlighted that government policies are increasingly aligned toward supporting frontline officers through enhanced resources, better working conditions, and continuous development programmers aimed at strengthening institutional performance.
Also speaking at the event, the Director, Vehicle Inspection Service, Engr. Akin-George Fashola, described the initiative as timely and necessary. He explained that the training would enable officers to better relate with the public, especially in situations where empathy, clarity, and diplomacy are needed. Fashola noted that emotional intelligence is one of the most powerful tools for public-facing officers, as it shapes their interactions, strengthens their ability to de-escalate conflict, and reinforces the credibility of the service.
He encouraged the officers to use the knowledge gained to change negative public perceptions about the profession. According to him, VIOs must consistently demonstrate professionalism, discipline, and respect for road users to build stronger community relations and foster positive engagement. Fashola reiterated that the Lagos State Government is keen on driving innovation and supporting its workforce with programmers that promote a productive and friendly work environment.
The director further stated that the VIS is undergoing deliberate reforms aimed at positioning the service as one of the most efficient transport regulatory bodies in the country. He urged the officers to take ownership of the training, see it as an opportunity to grow, and apply the lessons in their day-to-day responsibilities.
The two-day masterclass is expected to produce a more motivated and capable team of Vehicle Inspection Officers, better prepared to handle the complexities of modern road safety management while reflecting the values of Lagos State.
