WAPA Promotes Mental Health Awareness

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting mental health awareness and emotional well-being through initiatives aimed at encouraging healthier families and stronger communities.

Eko Hot News reports that the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) organised a Mental Health Awareness Programme themed “More Good Days Together: Restoring Peace, Reclaiming Joy” at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Alausa, Ikeja.

The event brought together government officials, stakeholders, mental health advocates, and residents for meaningful discussions on emotional resilience, mental wellness, and the importance of creating supportive communities.

Participants also explored practical ways to reduce the stigma associated with mental health challenges while encouraging individuals to seek professional support without fear or discrimination.

Speaking at the programme, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. (Mrs.) Bolaji Cecilia Dada, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Rianat Ajibike Onigbanjo, described mental health as an essential part of overall well-being.

She explained that true wellness goes beyond physical health, noting that emotional stability, resilience, hope, and the ability to cope with life’s challenges are equally important.

According to the Commissioner, the awareness programme was designed to provide a safe environment where participants could engage in honest conversations, gain practical knowledge, and better understand mental health issues.

She encouraged residents to embrace a culture where seeking emotional or psychological support is viewed as a positive step toward overall well-being rather than a source of stigma.

Hon. Dada reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to implementing people-focused programmes under the THEMES+ Development Agenda.

She said the administration remains committed to strengthening families, expanding access to healthcare services, empowering women, and supporting vulnerable residents across Lagos State.

The Commissioner highlighted several interventions by the Ministry, including counselling and psychosocial support services provided through its Domestic Violence Unit.

She added that the Ministry’s skills acquisition and economic empowerment programmes also contribute to emotional and psychological well-being by helping residents achieve financial independence and personal confidence.

According to her, economic empowerment plays an important role in improving mental wellness by reducing stress associated with financial challenges while creating opportunities for self-reliance.

Hon. Dada also referenced the Ministry’s recent Parenting Programme titled “Transforming Families Through Positive and Intentional Parenting.”

She explained that many emotional and mental health concerns often begin within the family environment, making positive parenting an important foundation for healthier communities.

The Commissioner encouraged participants to apply the lessons learned during the programme in their homes, workplaces, schools, places of worship, and neighbourhoods.

She also urged them to become ambassadors for emotional well-being by promoting understanding, empathy, and healthy relationships within their communities.

A major highlight of the event was an interactive presentation delivered by mental health facilitator Mrs. Damilola Odukoya.

Her presentation examined several important topics, including understanding mental health in everyday life, trauma, grief, emotional recovery, self-care, resilience, and the value of strong community support systems.

She also discussed practical strategies for overcoming stigma, building emotional strength, and recognising when professional support may be beneficial.

The interactive session encouraged participants to ask questions, share experiences, and discuss practical approaches to maintaining emotional wellness in daily life.

Many attendees described the discussions as insightful and relevant, noting that they gained a deeper understanding of mental health and the importance of supporting one another.

Participants also expressed a renewed commitment to prioritising emotional well-being within their families, workplaces, and wider communities.

In her closing remarks, the Director of the Domestic Violence Unit, Mrs. Abiola Osifowokan, appreciated Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for supporting programmes that promote the well-being of Lagos residents.

She also commended the Commissioner, the Permanent Secretary, the facilitator, Ministry officials, members of the media, participants, and the organising committee for contributing to the success of the awareness programme.

Mrs. Osifowokan reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to sustaining initiatives that promote mental wellness, strengthen families, and improve the quality of life for residents across Lagos State.

The programme reflects the Lagos State Government’s continued efforts to build a society where mental health is prioritised, emotional well-being is supported, and residents have greater access to information, care, and community-based support services.
