Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has visited communities affected by persistent rainfall across the state, reassuring residents that the government is intensifying efforts to reduce flooding and protect lives and property.
Eko Hot News reports that Governor Sanwo-Olu toured several flood-affected communities to assess the situation firsthand and interact with residents whose homes, businesses and daily activities have been impacted by the prolonged rainfall.
During the visit, the governor acknowledged the challenges posed by the heavy rains, noting that the volume of rainfall has placed considerable pressure on Lagos’ drainage infrastructure.
He explained that Lagos’ coastal location presents additional challenges during the rainy season, as high tidal levels and rising lagoon waters often slow the discharge of stormwater from drainage channels into surrounding water bodies.
Sanwo-Olu, however, expressed concern over the indiscriminate disposal of refuse into drainage channels, describing the practice as one of the major contributors to flooding in several parts of the state.
According to the governor, officials observed large quantities of plastic waste, household refuse and banned Styrofoam materials obstructing major drainage channels during the inspection.
He warned that anyone found dumping refuse illegally would face prosecution in accordance with existing environmental laws, stressing that environmental regulations would be strictly enforced.
The governor reiterated that maintaining a clean environment is essential to improving the efficiency of drainage systems and reducing the impact of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
To address the situation, Sanwo-Olu directed relevant government agencies to intensify drainage clearing operations across vulnerable communities and ensure that blocked channels are promptly opened.
He also instructed emergency response teams to continue supporting residents affected by the flooding while monitoring flood-prone locations across the state.
The governor assured Lagosians that the state government remains committed to responding quickly whenever flooding occurs and to strengthening measures that improve the city’s resilience.
Sanwo-Olu said drainage maintenance, environmental sanitation and infrastructure upgrades remain key priorities under his administration’s urban development agenda.
He encouraged residents to support government efforts by adopting responsible environmental practices and avoiding activities capable of obstructing drainage systems.
According to the governor, government intervention alone cannot completely eliminate flooding without active public participation and environmental responsibility.
He urged Lagos residents to properly dispose of waste through approved channels and avoid throwing refuse into gutters, canals and waterways.
The governor also advised residents to observe all safety guidelines issued by emergency management agencies throughout the rainy season.
He encouraged motorists and pedestrians to avoid roads affected by flooding whenever possible and to exercise caution during periods of intense rainfall.
Environmental experts have consistently identified blocked drainage systems, rapid urbanisation and changing weather patterns as major factors contributing to urban flooding.
They also emphasise that sustained public awareness, improved waste management and regular drainage maintenance remain essential to reducing flood risks in densely populated cities.
Lagos State has continued investing in drainage rehabilitation, flood control projects and environmental enforcement as part of broader efforts to strengthen climate resilience.
Government agencies have also intensified public enlightenment campaigns encouraging residents to maintain cleaner surroundings and support environmental sustainability initiatives.
The governor reaffirmed that the administration will continue monitoring vulnerable communities while deploying the necessary resources to improve drainage infrastructure and emergency response.
He expressed appreciation to residents for their patience and cooperation during the challenging weather conditions.
Sanwo-Olu concluded by assuring Lagosians that the government remains committed to working around the clock to minimise flooding, safeguard communities and build a cleaner, safer and more resilient Lagos for everyone.
