Lagos Unveils 2026 Tree Planting Day

The Lagos State Government has announced the commencement of activities for the 2026 Annual Tree Planting Day, reaffirming its commitment to building a greener and more environmentally sustainable city.

Eko Hot News reports that the General Manager of the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK), Mrs. Adetoun Ibilola Popoola, unveiled the programme and encouraged residents to actively participate in this year’s statewide tree planting campaign.

The 2026 edition is themed “Trees for Lagos: Our City, Our Responsibility,” highlighting the importance of collective action in protecting and improving the environment.

According to Mrs. Popoola, the annual initiative is designed to increase green spaces, improve air quality, and promote environmental sustainability across Lagos State.

She explained that the campaign also seeks to encourage residents, institutions, and organisations to take greater responsibility for preserving the state’s natural environment.

The LASPARK General Manager said the initiative aligns with the environmental agenda of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

She noted that the state government remains committed to combating climate change through practical and sustainable environmental programmes.

Mrs. Popoola said tree planting continues to play an important role in reducing environmental challenges associated with rapid urbanisation.

She explained that expanding green cover contributes to cleaner air, improved biodiversity, and healthier communities.

According to her, trees also help regulate temperatures, improve the urban landscape, and create more comfortable public spaces for residents.

She called on individuals, schools, corporate organisations, religious institutions, and community groups to join the statewide exercise.

The tree planting campaign will be carried out across the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State.

Mrs. Popoola encouraged every resident to view tree planting as a civic responsibility rather than a one-day event.

She stressed that planting trees is only the first step, noting that proper care and maintenance are essential for long-term environmental benefits.

The official commencement of the exercise is scheduled for Tuesday, July 14, 2026, with activities expected to take place simultaneously across different parts of the state.

She urged participants to plant, nurture, and protect trees to ensure they grow into lasting environmental assets.

According to the LASPARK boss, every tree planted today contributes to a healthier and more sustainable future for generations to come.

The annual Tree Planting Day has become one of Lagos State’s flagship environmental programmes, bringing together government agencies, private organisations, schools, and residents.

Over the years, the initiative has contributed significantly to expanding the state’s urban forest and promoting environmental awareness.

Environmental experts continue to emphasise the importance of tree planting in addressing climate-related challenges such as rising temperatures and declining air quality.

Trees also support wildlife habitats, reduce soil erosion, absorb carbon emissions, and enhance the beauty of urban communities.

The Lagos State Government has consistently invested in greening projects as part of broader efforts to improve the quality of life for residents.

Public parks, road medians, recreational spaces, and public institutions have benefited from continuous landscaping and tree planting programmes.

Mrs. Popoola noted that community participation remains essential to achieving the state’s environmental sustainability goals.

She encouraged residents to inspire neighbours, friends, and young people to embrace environmental stewardship through simple actions such as planting and caring for trees.

Corporate organisations were also invited to support the campaign through corporate social responsibility initiatives focused on environmental conservation.

Schools, she added, have a unique opportunity to educate students about the importance of protecting nature while participating in practical tree planting activities.

The commissioner reiterated that environmental sustainability requires a shared commitment between government and citizens.

She concluded by encouraging every Lagos resident to take part in the 2026 Tree Planting Day, reminding them that a greener, cleaner, and healthier Lagos begins with collective responsibility.

As preparations continue for the statewide exercise, the government expressed optimism that widespread participation will strengthen Lagos’ reputation as one of Africa’s leading cities in environmental sustainability and urban greening.
