The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has evacuated about 418,500 tonnes of waste across Lagos State in May 2026 as part of intensified efforts to improve environmental sanitation and service delivery.
Eko Hot News reports that the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the figure represents an average daily evacuation of about 13,200 tonnes, handled in collaboration with licensed Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators.
He noted that 442 PSP operators were active during the period, while 27 collection routes are currently under review to improve efficiency and expand coverage across the state.
According to the report, LAWMA cleared 173 identified waste blackspots, including markets, road medians, bus stops, and other public spaces affected by indiscriminate dumping.
The agency also received 474 complaints and service requests from residents within the month, with ongoing measures to improve response time and service delivery.
Dr. Gbadegesin stated that LAWMA currently deploys compactor trucks and other operational equipment to support waste evacuation and maintain environmental hygiene across Lagos.
He explained that ongoing reforms include route restructuring, improved monitoring of PSP operators, infrastructure upgrades, and sustained enforcement against environmental violations.
The LAWMA boss urged residents to patronise approved waste operators, report service gaps through official channels, and avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to building a cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable waste management system in line with the demands of Lagos’ growing population.
