The Lagos State Government, through Health District III, has reaffirmed its commitment to improving environmental health systems and ensuring safer communities across its coverage areas.
Eko Hot News reports that the pledge was made during the distribution of disinfection, vector control, and water testing materials to selected Primary Health Centres and public facilities.
The exercise took place at the Health District III Headquarters in Ikoyi, Lagos, covering Ibeju-Lekki, Eti-Osa, and Epe axis.
Permanent Secretary of Health District III, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke, said the initiative is designed to strengthen infection control and environmental safety across health facilities.
She explained that the materials will support prevention of vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever.
Dr. Adeleke added that the water testing kits will help monitor water quality and prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid.
According to her, environmental health remains a critical pillar of public health delivery in the state.
She noted that the intervention is a strategic step toward improving sanitation and ensuring safe water access within health facilities.
The Permanent Secretary said earlier assessments revealed gaps in environmental monitoring, which informed the distribution exercise.
She disclosed that water quality tests conducted at some facilities showed acceptable safety standards.
Dr. Adeleke also linked the intervention to the state’s broader preparedness efforts against potential public health threats, including Ebola Virus Disease.
She urged beneficiaries to ensure proper use, maintenance, and accountability in handling the materials provided.
The Director of Environmental Health Services, Sanitarian Mary Akinola, said the intervention followed findings from quarterly monitoring exercises.
She explained that identified gaps in environmental hygiene and water safety prompted government action.
Akinola noted that the materials will enhance the capacity of health workers to carry out routine environmental checks.
She commended the state government for its continued investment in public health infrastructure and preventive healthcare systems.
Health officials said the initiative will support early detection and prevention of environmental health risks across communities.
They added that improved monitoring will help reduce disease outbreaks and promote healthier living conditions.
The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to sustaining environmental health programmes and strengthening primary healthcare delivery.
Authorities urged continued collaboration among health workers to ensure effective implementation of the initiative.
