The Lagos Waste Management Authority has called for increased investment to strengthen waste management infrastructure and support long-term environmental sustainability in Lagos State.

Eko Hot News reports that the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, made the appeal while hosting a delegation from the European Union at the agency’s headquarters in Ijora Olopa.

Gbadegesin explained that Lagos State is yet to develop a comprehensive Waste Management Master Plan. He noted that such a framework is essential for guiding sustainable practices and long-term investment.

He emphasised that bridging existing gaps across the waste value chain requires consistent and strategic funding. Key areas identified include landfill development, recycling systems, and waste-to-energy projects.

The LAWMA boss highlighted the importance of establishing more Material Recovery Facilities to improve waste sorting and recycling. He pointed out locations such as Epe and Badagry as strategic areas for expansion.

He also noted the need for investments in biogas plants and modern street sweeping systems. According to him, these initiatives will enhance operational efficiency and service delivery across the state.

Gbadegesin stressed the role of capacity development and the expansion of the Public-Private Partnership model. He said increased participation of PSP operators will strengthen the waste management ecosystem.

He further advocated for the promotion of local manufacturing and assembly of waste management equipment. This includes compactor trucks and tricycle compactors to support operations.

The LAWMA chief stated that these measures would reduce operational costs while improving overall performance. He added that a structured approach is necessary for a rapidly growing megacity like Lagos.

Speaking during the visit, the EU delegation leader, Jacques Remy, commended LAWMA’s reform-driven initiatives. He acknowledged the agency’s efforts to improve waste management systems.
