United States President Donald Trump has called on Cuba to pursue renewed engagement with the United States, following recent changes affecting the island nation’s long-standing energy and financial ties with Venezuela.
Eko Hot News reports that Trump made the call via a post on his Truth Social platform, stating that Cuba would no longer benefit from the oil supplies and economic backing previously provided by Venezuela under bilateral arrangements.

According to Trump, the decades-old agreement between Havana and Caracas, which involved energy support in exchange for security and advisory services, has come to an end. He said the shift presents Cuba with an opportunity to reconsider its international partnerships.
The former president emphasised that the United States now plays a central role in shaping regional developments, noting that Venezuela’s current situation has altered the balance of influence in the Americas.
Trump also shared a social media post suggesting that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has Cuban heritage, could play a significant leadership role in Cuba’s future political direction. He described the idea as a positive prospect without providing further details.

He claimed that Cuban personnel previously deployed in Venezuela were affected by recent operations, adding that the evolving circumstances should encourage Havana to reassess its strategic choices.
Cuba has relied heavily on Venezuelan oil since the early 2000s, when agreements initiated under former Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez helped cushion the impact of long-standing U.S. economic restrictions on the island.
Analysts say any disruption to Venezuelan support could place additional strain on Cuba’s already fragile economy, increasing pressure on authorities to explore alternative diplomatic and economic relationships.
Trump urged Cuban leaders to consider constructive dialogue with Washington, suggesting that cooperation could open doors to economic relief and stability. He did not outline specific policy proposals, but stressed the importance of making timely decisions.
The remarks have drawn attention across international media, highlighting renewed focus on U.S.–Cuba relations amid broader geopolitical shifts in Latin America.
As regional dynamics evolve, the future of Cuba’s external partnerships remains uncertain, with global attention fixed on how Havana responds to changing alliances and economic realities.
