Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting women’s rights and expanding opportunities for their advancement.
Eko Hot News reports that the Governor made this known during the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration in Lagos.
The event was organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.
It brought together public officials, policymakers and advocates to discuss gender equality and inclusion.
Sanwo-Olu emphasised that empowering women economically is essential for inclusive growth.
He noted that investments in social protection, legal systems and leadership opportunities remain a priority.

The Governor stressed the need to move beyond awareness to measurable action.
He said the focus should shift from promises to performance and from celebration to structural change.
According to him, Lagos is committed to building a society where rights are guaranteed and opportunities are accessible.
Sanwo-Olu aligned the state with the global theme for International Women’s Day 2026.
The theme, “Rights. Justice. Action for All Women and Girls,” highlights the need for accountability and results.
He explained that gender inclusion is embedded in the state’s development agenda.
The Governor noted that sustainable growth cannot be achieved without equal participation of women.

He introduced the campaign message, “Give to Gain,” as a guiding principle for governance.
According to him, providing access to education, protection and opportunities leads to measurable progress.
He emphasised that empowering women contributes to safer communities and economic development.
Sanwo-Olu called on stakeholders to use their influence to strengthen rights and promote inclusion.
He also encouraged the private sector to support initiatives that expand opportunities for women.
The First Lady of Lagos State, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, also addressed participants at the event.
She stressed the importance of translating commitments into meaningful change.
She highlighted the need to build confidence, resilience and leadership capacity among women.

The First Lady also advocated for increased access to finance for women-led businesses.
She encouraged greater participation of women in elective positions and public offices.
According to her, progress must be intentional and supported by strong systems.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Bolaji Dada, emphasised collaboration.
She noted that government, civil society and development partners must work together to achieve results.
Dada highlighted the importance of entrepreneurship and digital skills in empowering women.
She said these initiatives are key to sustainable development and economic growth.
Other stakeholders also shared their perspectives on advancing gender equality.
APC Women Leader, Iyabo Eletu, called for stronger support for female leadership and businesses.
Chairman, House Committee on Women Affairs, Omolara Oyekan-Olumegbon, encouraged unity among women.

She stressed the importance of policies that promote welfare and development.
Guest Speaker, Justice Atinuke Oluyemi (rtd), advocated for stronger protection systems.
She called for increased representation of women in governance and decision-making roles.
Participants at the event agreed on the need for consistent policy implementation.
They emphasised that gender equality requires collective effort and sustained commitment.
The gathering reinforced the importance of creating safe and inclusive environments for women and girls.
