Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day activities by hosting members of the Lagos Chapter of the Nigerian Legion at the State Executive Council meeting.

Eko Hot News reports that during the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced a ₦100 million donation, two utility vehicles for Legion operations, four 2-bedroom apartments, and additional supplies, including food items, for veterans and their families.

The governor described the annual Emblem Appeal as a key initiative to honour military personnel who served the nation and those who returned with severe injuries from past national service operations.

He stressed the need for tangible support for veterans, describing the contributions as “our way of saying thank you for the sacrifices that allow all of us to live in a free and united country.”

Sanwo-Olu emphasised that Lagos State remains committed to improving the welfare of veterans and their families through practical measures rather than only ceremonial recognition.

The Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed annually on January 15, commemorates Nigeria’s military personnel who served in past national security operations, international peacekeeping, and protective duties.

Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that the support package demonstrates Lagos State’s gratitude for those who dedicated their lives to safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and stability.

The initiative also includes plans to enhance veteran welfare through housing support, improved logistics for the Nigerian Legion, and regular supplies to address their daily needs.

Officials of the Nigerian Legion expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government for consistently recognising veterans’ contributions and supporting their well-being.

The governor’s pledge aligns with broader national efforts to provide adequate care, social support, and recognition for retired service members across Nigeria.

Leaders said the event marks the beginning of activities leading to the 2026 Remembrance Day, reinforcing the state’s commitment to honouring and supporting veterans in meaningful ways.
