Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has commended the pioneer graduates of MIVA Open University, describing their achievement as evidence of how technology is reshaping access to higher education and expanding learning opportunities.
Eko Hot News reports that the Governor gave the commendation at the institution’s maiden convocation ceremony held at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts, Iganmu, Lagos, where he praised the graduates for their resilience and determination.
He noted that the graduating class represents a new era of learners who have embraced digital education and demonstrated that academic excellence can be achieved beyond traditional classroom settings.
According to him, the success of the pioneer students reflects a broader transformation in Nigeria’s education landscape, driven by innovation, flexibility, and technology-enabled learning systems.
Governor Sanwo-Olu described the graduates as trailblazers whose achievements validate the vision of making quality higher education more accessible to a wider population.
He praised the founders and leadership of MIVA Open University for their commitment to building a forward-looking institution that aligns with global trends in digital learning.
The Governor, represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. ‘Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, said the university’s model supports Lagos State’s broader vision of a knowledge-driven economy.
He highlighted several state initiatives aimed at youth empowerment, including Lagos Innovates, the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund, and the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, all designed to build skills and leadership capacity among young people.
Sanwo-Olu urged the graduates to embrace innovation, entrepreneurship, and continuous learning as they move into the next phase of their lives.
He advised them to remain adaptable in a rapidly changing world, stressing that future success depends on creativity, discipline, and integrity.
The Governor also acknowledged the role of parents, guardians, and lecturers in supporting the academic journey of the graduates, describing their contributions as essential to the students’ success.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the graduation as a milestone that reflects the growing democratisation of education through technology-enabled platforms.
He noted that learning is no longer confined to physical classrooms, but increasingly accessible through flexible and innovative systems that maintain academic standards.
In his remarks, the Sarkin Kano, Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, emphasized that education remains a fundamental right and a key driver of national development.
He commended MIVA Open University for expanding access to education, particularly through digital platforms that reach learners regardless of location.
Sanusi also highlighted the importance of girl-child education, describing it as essential to sustainable development and long-term national progress.
