Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has charged councillors across the state to carry out their legislative and oversight duties with courage, empathy, and a clear sense of purpose.
Eko Hot News reports that the Governor gave the charge while declaring open the Onboarding and Retreat Programme for Councillors in Lagos State, held at Novotel Hotels, Chevron Drive, Lekki.
Governor Sanwo-Olu urged the councillors to see their offices as platforms for grassroots service, stressing that effective lawmaking, responsible oversight, and sincere representation are essential to deepening good governance across Lagos State.

He emphasised that councillors occupy a strategic position closest to the people and must therefore engage their constituents, understand local needs, and translate those needs into purposeful legislation and development-focused actions.
The Governor noted that strong local governance remains critical to the success of the state’s development agenda and called on councillors to uphold integrity, accountability, and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

The retreat brought together councillors from the 377 wards across Lagos State, serving as a platform for capacity building, legislative orientation, and policy engagement aimed at strengthening council-level governance.
Participants were exposed to sessions designed to improve their understanding of legislative procedures, oversight functions, and effective community representation.

Dignitaries at the programme included the Chairman, House Committee on Procurement, Hon. Samuel Apata; Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Dr Nurudeen Yekinni Agbaje; Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government and Conference 57 Chairman, Engr. Sesan Olowa; Director-General, Lagos State Records and Archives Bureau, Mr. Razak Amodu; and General Manager, Lagos State Residents Registration Agency, Mrs. Bilikis Adebiyi-Abiola.
Seasoned resource persons and other stakeholders also participated, underscoring the importance of the retreat in strengthening grassroots democracy and service delivery in Lagos State.
