The House of Representatives Committee on Health has commended the Lagos State Government for the significant progress recorded in its primary health care system during an oversight visit to selected facilities across the state.
The Eko Hot News reports Hon. Amos Gwamna Magaji, the Committee toured several PHCs to assess how Lagos has utilised the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) and the Impact Fund, both Federal Government interventions targeted at strengthening primary healthcare nationwide.
Hon. Magaji said the Committee’s visit was focused on evaluating how federal investments are improving frontline health services. “We are here to see firsthand how Lagos State has utilised the BHCPF and the Impact Fund to improve primary health care services, enhance facility performance, and ensure these investments translate into real benefits for citizens,” he stated.
During the visit, Committee members inspected the facility’s infrastructure, service quality, staffing levels, and compliance with national primary healthcare standards. They also interacted with health workers, facility managers, patients, and community stakeholders to gain deeper insight into grassroots service delivery.
Hon. Magaji expressed satisfaction with the improvements observed. “We are impressed with the progress and dedication seen across the PHCs visited today. Lagos State is clearly committed to strengthening its primary health care system,” he remarked.
He encouraged health workers to remain committed and professional, noting that frontline providers are the backbone of Nigeria’s primary healthcare network. “Your dedication is essential to sustaining the gains recorded and ensuring Nigerians receive the quality care they deserve,” he added.
The Committee also identified areas requiring attention, such as expanding infrastructure, upgrading some PHCs to Level 2, improving staffing, and enhancing medical equipment. The Honourable Magaji noted that these findings will guide future legislative recommendations to strengthen primary healthcare across the country.
The delegation was welcomed by Dr. (Mrs.) Kemi Ogunleye, Special Adviser on Health, representing the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi. She commended the Committee’s visit and reaffirmed the Ministry’s readiness to collaborate with lawmakers to further advance primary health care services in Lagos State. “This visit deepens collaboration and helps improve health outcomes for residents,” she said.
Also present was the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, mni, who highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at improving access, quality, and efficiency within the primary health care system.
