Oko Oba Abattoir in Lagos has been shut down indefinitely.

Eko Hot News reports that the Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced the indefinite closure of the Oko Oba Abattoir in Agege due to persistent unhygienic practices and repeated breaches of environmental regulations.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the closure of Oko Oba Abattoir in Agege during an inspection visit to the facility on Wednesday.

Wahab expressed the government’s concern over the unsanitary conditions and failure to comply with established public health standards.

“We have announced the indefinite closure of the Oko Oba Abattoir, Agege, over unhygienic practices and the violation of various environmental laws,” Wahab wrote on X, using the hashtag #ZeroToleranceLagos.

The commissioner was accompanied on the inspection by representatives from the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, and the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA.

According to Wahab, the action forms part of the state’s broader initiative to enforce environmental laws and ensure that meat processing facilities adhere to proper hygiene and sanitation protocols.

Before the government’s intervention, residents and traders had voiced their concerns regarding the abattoir’s impact on the surrounding environment. Complaints included foul odours, improper waste management, and the release of untreated wastewater into nearby drains and canals.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources assured the public of continued efforts to safeguard health and environmental safety across Lagos.

“No individual or business will be allowed to endanger the lives of others through negligence or reckless disregard for the law, let us try something right,” he added.
