The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has renewed its call on residents to adopt responsible waste disposal practices to support a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Lagos.

Eko Hot News reports that the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, appealed while speaking on Sunrise Daily, a flagship programme on Channels Television.

Dr Gbadegesin noted that effective waste handling remains critical in a rapidly urbanising city like Lagos, stressing that keeping the environment clean is a shared responsibility between government and residents.

He disclosed that LAWMA continues daily waste evacuation across the state, alongside routine collection services and the persistent clearing of flashpoints caused by indiscriminate dumping and poor waste practices.

The LAWMA boss encouraged residents to embrace waste sorting at source, explaining that separating recyclables from general waste would improve efficiency, reduce landfill pressure, and strengthen recycling efforts.

He emphasised that waste should no longer be viewed as mere refuse but as a valuable resource capable of driving economic opportunities, job creation, and private sector participation.

Dr Gbadegesin further advocated a circular economy approach, where materials are recovered, reused, and recycled, rather than the traditional linear system of collection and disposal.

On enforcement, he revealed that LAWMA prosecuted over 400 environmental infraction cases in 2025, citing a recent incident where an offender was jailed for indiscriminate dumping.

He urged residents to comply with environmental laws, shun illegal dumping, and promptly report offenders to support enforcement efforts.

Dr Gbadegesin reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to strengthen waste management systems and ensure a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient Lagos State.
