The Lagos State Government has commenced the installation of new pumps at the Iju Headworks and Akute Water Intake Stations as part of ongoing efforts to improve water production, strengthen operational efficiency and expand access to safe water for residents.
Eko Hot News reports that the project is being executed through the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) under the approval and funding of the Lagos State Government, reinforcing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to improving public water infrastructure across the state.
The intervention marks another milestone in the state’s investment in critical infrastructure aimed at providing reliable and sustainable water supply for millions of Lagosians.
Government officials said the installation of the new pumping systems forms part of a broader strategy to modernise key water production facilities and improve service delivery.
The project is being implemented under the “Rehabilitation of Iju Headworks and Akute Intake Station – Lots 1, 2 and 3.”
According to the Lagos Water Corporation, the rehabilitation programme is designed to upgrade ageing infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and increase water production capacity.
Officials noted that the initiative will also expand access to clean and potable water in communities across Lagos State.
The ongoing work forms part of the Corporation’s comprehensive eight-month rehabilitation programme for the Iju and Adiyan Water Treatment Plants.
The rehabilitation programme, fully funded by the Lagos State Government, commenced in February 2026 and is scheduled for completion in October 2026.
Speaking during the project’s kick-off meeting earlier this year, the Managing Director of Lagos Water Corporation, Engr. Mukhtaar Tijani, described the rehabilitation as a transformational initiative.
He said the project aligns with the Corporation’s Strategic Business Plan and the Lagos State Government’s vision of delivering modern and efficient public water services.
According to Tijani, the project focuses on replacing and upgrading critical pumping systems and supporting infrastructure.
He explained that the upgrades will restore optimal operational efficiency and strengthen the Corporation’s overall water production capacity.
The Managing Director noted that the intervention reflects Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s continued commitment to revitalising water infrastructure across Lagos State.
He added that improved water facilities will contribute significantly to meeting the growing demand for clean water in the state.
Tijani stressed that all contractors and stakeholders involved in the project are expected to maintain the highest engineering and quality standards.
He also urged project teams to ensure timely completion of the rehabilitation in line with the approved implementation schedule.
According to him, successful execution of the project will deliver lasting benefits to residents and improve the reliability of public water supply.
Upon completion, the rehabilitation is expected to enhance the operational performance of both the Iju Headworks and Akute Water Intake Stations.
Officials said the project will increase water production, reduce operational downtime and strengthen the efficiency of water distribution systems.
The improved facilities are also expected to provide more stable and reliable water services to households, businesses and public institutions across Lagos.
