The Lagos State Government has officially announced the commencement of the 21st edition of the Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition, reinforcing its dedication to advancing academic excellence and youth empowerment across the state.
Eko Hot News reports that the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, disclosed the details while briefing journalists. He stated that the 2025 edition will be exceptional and fully aligned with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda, noting that the Ministry has taken deliberate steps to elevate the competition as a premier platform for promoting literacy and intellectual development.
Alli-Balogun highlighted the critical role of the programme in strengthening students’ language proficiency. He affirmed that the state remains committed to initiatives that support literacy and stimulate healthy academic growth among young learners.
The competition, organised by the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) in partnership with the New Era Foundation, is scheduled to be held at the Eko FM Multi-Purpose Hall, Agidingbi, Ikeja. The Junior Category for primary school pupils will take place on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, while the Senior Category for secondary school students will follow on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.
Describing the annual contest as one of Lagos’ most celebrated academic events, the Commissioner noted that the Spelling Bee continues to provide a platform for students to demonstrate confidence, accuracy, and intellectual capacity. He further revealed that the top performer in the Senior Category will be rewarded with various prizes and will also assume the symbolic role of One-Day Governor—an opportunity that offers invaluable exposure to leadership and public administration.
To ensure a smooth and high-quality event, he explained that a planning committee was inaugurated in October and has since engaged with technical experts, including a seasoned quiz master, to uphold the competition’s standards and credibility.
Alli-Balogun assured that this year’s edition will be enriching and impactful, incorporating new features designed to enhance the experience for both contestants and attendees.
The Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition remains a driving force for academic excellence and a platform for grooming future leaders across the state.
