The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila, has conducted an inspection tour of key heritage and tourism sites in Badagry as part of efforts to strengthen the town’s global tourism appeal.
Eko Hot News reports that the inspection visit with the Permanent Secretary leading a delegation to assess historical landmarks and tourism facilities across the historic coastal town.
During the tour, the delegation visited the Badagry Heritage Museum, a major cultural site that houses nine galleries documenting the history and impact of the transatlantic slave trade.
The team also inspected the Vlekete Slave Market Museum, a landmark that preserves important aspects of Badagry’s historical narrative.

Other locations visited during the inspection included the ongoing development at the Point of No Return, the Information Front Desk Office and the historic Agia Tree Monument.
Speaking during the tour, Oyekan-Ismaila emphasised the importance of upgrading and rebranding museums and heritage infrastructure in Badagry to attract more international visitors.
She noted that improving visitor experience at historical sites would help position Lagos State as a leading cultural and heritage tourism destination in Africa.
The Permanent Secretary explained that the State Government is committed to preserving the historical significance of Badagry while promoting the town as a globally recognised tourism hub.

Drawing from insights gained during a recent visit to Rwanda, she observed how heritage destinations in the country have been carefully curated and modernised to offer immersive experiences for tourists.
According to her, heritage sites in Rwanda have been strategically developed and promoted to attract visitors from around the world.
She stated that Lagos State could adopt similar approaches by improving storytelling around its heritage sites and strengthening their global promotion.
Oyekan-Ismaila also recommended the integration of digital interpretation tools, enhanced visitor facilities and improved site management systems.

She explained that such innovations would help transform Badagry’s historic landmarks into modern tourism attractions capable of attracting visitors from across Africa and beyond.
While visiting the Badagry Heritage Museum, the Permanent Secretary interacted with students of Gracewill Academy who were on an educational excursion.
She encouraged the students to remain committed to their studies and uphold positive values that contribute to the development of society.
According to her, understanding history is an important foundation for building a responsible and progressive future.

As part of her visit to Badagry, the Permanent Secretary also paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Akran of Badagry, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I.
She delivered the message of sympathy on behalf of the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the Special Adviser, Idris Aregbe, and the entire staff of the ministry.
Oyekan-Ismaila described the late monarch as a respected leader who promoted unity, cultural pride and national integration.
She noted that his legacy of service and leadership would continue to inspire the people of Badagry and beyond.

The Permanent Secretary also commended the people of Badagry for their commitment to preserving the town’s cultural heritage.
She acknowledged Badagry’s international significance as a historical destination that continues to attract visitors from across the world.
Oyekan-Ismaila further assured the royal family of the Lagos State Government’s support during the period of mourning.
She added that a committee has been constituted by the relevant authorities to continue engagement with the family.

Responding on behalf of the community, the Baale of Apanukoh, Mobee Viavoh, thanked the Permanent Secretary and her delegation for the condolence visit.
He described the visit as a strong demonstration of solidarity with the royal family and the Badagry community.
Also speaking, the younger brother of the late monarch, Adetunji Akran, expressed appreciation to the ministry’s delegation for their prayers and support.
He also offered prayers for the continued success of the ministry in promoting tourism and preserving the cultural heritage of Lagos State.
Stakeholders noted that the inspection visit highlights the Lagos State Government’s commitment to strengthening heritage tourism and preserving the rich historical legacy of Badagry.
