The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to replicate the Ikosi-Ketu Market biodigester project across major markets as part of efforts to promote sustainable waste management and strengthen the circular economy.

Eko Hot News reports that the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed at the official launch of the Ikosi-Ketu Biodigester Project.

Dr Gbadegesin described the initiative as a practical model for treating organic market waste at source and reducing reliance on landfills.

He revealed that Ikosi-Ketu Market generates about 30 tonnes of waste daily, with nearly 90 per cent classified as organic, making it ideal for biodigestion.

According to him, the project demonstrates how organic market waste can be converted into clean energy and other valuable by-products.

The LAWMA boss noted that markets are major contributors to organic waste in Lagos, stressing that replicating the model would curb indiscriminate dumping and lower waste evacuation costs.

He added that the initiative would ease pressure on landfills, improve environmental sanitation, and support climate action.

Dr. Gbadegesin explained that the biodigester aligns with the state’s circular economy agenda by producing clean cooking gas, electricity, and organic fertiliser.

He also stated that the project would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate flooding risks linked to blocked drainage systems.

Market stakeholders have been trained to manage the facility, while LAWMA pledged continuous technical support as similar projects are rolled out across other markets.

The move reinforces Lagos State Government’s commitment to innovative waste solutions and sustainable urban development.
