The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has highlighted the growing role of cities in shaping economic and social transformation, describing Lagos as a strong example of Africa’s development potential.

The lecture, titled “Exercising Agency beyond the Nation-State: Debating Change and Transformation in the Global City, Lagos,” was delivered to an audience of scholars, policymakers and students.

According to a statement by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the presentation focused on the growing influence of cities in shaping development outcomes across the world.

Sanwo-Olu noted that global development discussions have traditionally focused on national governments while often overlooking the role of cities in driving economic progress.

He explained that urban centres are increasingly becoming hubs of innovation, investment and cultural exchange.

He explained that Lagos now ranks as Africa’s second-largest city economy with an estimated Gross Domestic Product of about $259 billion based on purchasing power parity.

The governor noted that the state’s economic strength reflects its role as a major commercial gateway within Nigeria.
