The Lagos State Government has commenced inspection of key facilities in Badagry ahead of the state burial ceremonies for the late Akran of Badagry, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I.
Eko Hot News reports that the inspection exercise was led by the Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, who also serves as Chairman of the Central Planning Committee. She was accompanied by members of the planning team and other government representatives.
Salu-Hundeyin described the forthcoming event as both a state and culturally significant occasion. She noted that Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu had directed thorough preparations to ensure a befitting ceremony.
She explained that several sub-committees have been established to manage different aspects of the programme. These committees have been holding regular meetings to coordinate logistics and planning.

The inspection covered major venues linked to the ceremonies. These included the main reception ground, places of worship, and designated memorial sites.
According to her, the team visited the proposed reception venue where the main celebration will take place. They also assessed the church for the memorial service and other key locations.
She added that a park will be named in honour of the late monarch. Plans are also underway for the construction of a new palace approved by the state government.
While the palace construction may not be completed before the ceremony, foundation-laying activities are scheduled. This includes the foundation for a monument in memory of the late Akran.

Salu-Hundeyin emphasized the scale of the event. She noted that arrangements are being made to accommodate a large number of attendees expected from within and outside the state.
She also highlighted the cultural and historical importance of Badagry. The town is known for heritage landmarks, including early Christian sites in Nigeria.
The Secretary reaffirmed the state’s respect for the late monarch. She noted that the government remains committed to supporting the Badagry Division.
Several dignitaries joined the inspection team. These included Babatunde Hunpe, Rauf Kayode Yemaren, and Bonu Solomon.

Other participants included community leaders, royal family members, and government officials. Their presence reflected the importance of the event to the community.
The burial programme is scheduled to hold from April 20 to April 26, 2026. Activities will span several days of remembrance and cultural celebration.
The main event is expected to take place at Badagry Grammar School. It will follow a memorial service at Freeman Memorial Methodist Cathedral.
The preparations underscore the significance of honouring traditional leadership. They also highlight the role of cultural heritage in Lagos State’s identity.
