The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has commended the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) for organising a Media and Information Literacy (MIL) capacity-building training for INEC FCT staff.

Eko Hot News reports that the FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Malam Aminu Kasimu Idris, gave the commendation during the two-day training programme held for selected INEC FCT personnel as preparations intensify for the forthcoming Area Council Elections.

Represented by the Administrative Secretary, Mrs Bimbo Oladunjoye, the REC noted that strengthening electoral integrity through media and information literacy has become increasingly critical due to the growing threats posed by misinformation and disinformation to democratic processes.

She explained that false information can undermine election credibility, compromise security, and erode public trust, stressing that the training would help staff identify manipulated digital content, including deepfakes, and improve their ability to communicate accurate and timely information to the public.

According to Malam Idris, the training is particularly important as INEC FCT prepares for the Area Council Elections scheduled for February 21, 2026, when the risk of rumours and online falsehoods is typically heightened.

He reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to protecting the information ecosystem by engaging responsibly with the media and other stakeholders to ensure that truth prevails over falsehoods during the electoral process.

The REC encouraged participants to actively engage in the sessions, share practical experiences, and apply the skills gained to enhance public communication and contribute to peaceful, credible, and secure elections.

He also expressed appreciation to CJID for its continued partnership and support in promoting transparency and professionalism within the electoral system.

The two-day workshop focused on equipping INEC FCT staff with practical tools to navigate the evolving digital information environment, manage online narratives, and respond effectively to misinformation that could disrupt democratic participation.

Organisers noted that the training aligns with broader efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s electoral integrity in an era where digital platforms play an increasingly influential role in shaping public opinion.
