LAWMA Gains Youth Clubs’ Support

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has secured the support of the Rotaract Club of Ikoyi and Achiever Leo Club for its efforts to promote sustainable waste management and environmental responsibility across Lagos State.

Eko Hot News reports that the commitment was made during a courtesy visit by representatives of both clubs to the LAWMA headquarters in Ijora-Olopa.

The visit provided an opportunity for the organisations to learn more about LAWMA’s waste management policies and ongoing environmental initiatives.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, received the delegation during the visit.

Gbadegesin outlined the Authority’s efforts to improve waste collection, recycling and resource recovery across the state.

He said LAWMA was adopting innovative approaches aimed at reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills.

According to him, discarded materials can also provide economic opportunities when properly sorted, recovered and recycled.

The LAWMA chief highlighted plans to develop Material Recovery Facilities at strategic locations across Lagos.

He identified Badagry and Agbowa among the areas being considered for the facilities.

The proposed centres are expected to strengthen waste sorting, recycling and resource recovery.

They could also create opportunities for businesses and individuals operating within the waste management value chain.

Gbadegesin explained that effective waste management requires more than regular collection and disposal.

He said residents need to understand the value of proper sorting, recycling and responsible waste disposal.

The LAWMA boss also highlighted the role of young people in promoting environmental sustainability.

He pointed to the LAWMA Academy as one of the Authority’s platforms for developing environmental awareness among children and youths.

The Academy provides participants with practical knowledge about waste management, recycling and sustainable living.

Gbadegesin said the programme encourages young people to view waste differently.

Rather than seeing discarded materials only as refuse, participants are taught how some materials can be transformed into useful products.

He said this approach could help develop entrepreneurial skills while encouraging young people to become environmental advocates.

During the meeting, the LAWMA management showcased innovative products created by interns of the LAWMA Academy.

The products were made from recyclable materials and demonstrated how creativity can give discarded items a new purpose.

Gbadegesin said the innovations showed the potential of recycling to support both environmental protection and economic empowerment.

He encouraged more young people to explore opportunities within the circular economy.

The circular economy promotes the reuse, repair, recovery and recycling of materials to reduce waste and maximise available resources.

LAWMA believes that greater public participation will be essential to achieving a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos.

The Authority therefore welcomed the interest shown by the Rotaract and Leo clubs in its environmental programmes.

Gbadegesin stressed that sustainable waste management cannot be achieved by government alone.

He called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, private organisations, civil society groups, youth organisations and residents.

According to him, collective action is necessary to improve environmental practices across communities.

The partnership with youth-focused organisations is expected to strengthen awareness campaigns and encourage more young people to participate in environmental activities.

The representatives of the two clubs expressed appreciation to LAWMA for receiving them and providing an opportunity to understand its operations.

The delegation was led by the President of Achiever Leo Club, Agboola Yussuf, and the Vice President of Rotaract Club of Ikoyi, Olayori Fawaz.

They gained first-hand information about LAWMA’s sustainability programmes and the Authority’s approach to waste management.

The clubs’ representatives also expressed interest in supporting initiatives that promote environmental consciousness among young people.

Their involvement could provide additional opportunities to reach communities through youth-led awareness and educational activities.

The engagement comes as Lagos continues to face the challenge of managing waste generated by its large and growing population.

With increased emphasis on recycling and resource recovery, LAWMA is seeking to move beyond conventional waste disposal methods.

The Authority is also encouraging residents to take greater responsibility for how waste is generated, sorted and disposed of.

Public awareness remains an important part of achieving this objective.

Educational programmes such as the LAWMA Academy are designed to introduce environmental responsibility at an early age.

The Authority also believes that exposing young people to recycling can encourage innovation and create new economic possibilities.

Through partnerships with organisations such as Rotaract and Leo clubs, LAWMA can further expand its environmental outreach.

The collaboration is expected to support the promotion of cleaner communities and responsible waste practices.

It also aligns with broader efforts to develop a circular economy in Lagos.

As plans for additional Material Recovery Facilities progress, the state is expected to place greater emphasis on waste sorting and recovery.

The proposed facilities could help increase the quantity of recyclable materials recovered from the waste stream.

They may also support new businesses and employment opportunities linked to recycling and resource recovery.

LAWMA’s engagement with the two youth organisations therefore represents another step toward strengthening public participation in environmental management.

The Authority is calling for continued cooperation as Lagos works toward a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment.
