LASG Hosts Summit on Youth–Police Engagement

The Lagos State Government has hosted a Political Intelligence Summit aimed at strengthening youth–police relations and promoting dialogue, trust, and cooperation between young people and law enforcement agencies across the State.

Eko Hot News reports that the summit was organised by the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement (OPL&CE) in collaboration with the Bureau of the Public Defender (BPD) as part of efforts to improve citizen–security agency engagement.

The one-day event was held at the POWA Multipurpose Hall, Special Protection Unit, GRA, Ikeja, and brought together key stakeholders in governance, justice administration, and security sectors.

Speaking at the summit, representatives of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr. Afolabi Abiodun Tajudeen, highlighted the importance of citizen participation in achieving sustainable security and social development.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the THEMES+ Development Agenda of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, particularly in the areas of security, governance, youth development, and civic inclusion.

Police

The Bureau of the Public Defender emphasized its mandate in protecting citizens’ rights, promoting legal awareness, and supporting access to justice for vulnerable groups across Lagos State.

Officials also reaffirmed the importance of respecting constitutional rights to peaceful expression while encouraging mutual understanding between citizens and security institutions.

The Permanent Secretary of OPL&CE, Engr. Sholabomi Shasore, described the summit as a platform designed to strengthen trust through continuous dialogue and structured engagement.

She stated that meaningful communication between government and citizens remains essential in building inclusive policies and improving social cohesion across communities.

According to her, the youth engagement programme provides opportunities for young people to contribute ideas and participate actively in governance processes affecting their communities.

Police

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, represented by ACP Vicky Mulero, commended the initiative, noting that it reflects global best practices in improving institutional relationships with citizens.

She added that such engagements help enhance professional capacity and encourage more responsive and people-centred approaches to public service delivery.

The Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Mr. Hameed Oyenuga, described the summit as timely and important in addressing emerging governance and security concerns.

He emphasized the need for continuous training and capacity development within institutions to ensure professionalism and adherence to established legal frameworks.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Femi Falana, called for improved welfare, adequate resources, and modern tools for law enforcement agencies to enhance efficiency and service delivery.

He also stressed the importance of equal application of justice and strengthened collaboration among government agencies to improve coordination and public confidence.

The summit concluded with a renewed commitment from stakeholders to deepen engagement, strengthen institutional trust, and promote constructive partnerships between youth and law enforcement agencies in Lagos State.
