President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose steep tariffs on Denmark and several European countries, escalating trade tensions as he links the move to his renewed push for control of Greenland.
Eko Hot News reports that President Donald Trump said the United States would introduce tariffs of up to 25 percent on imports from Denmark and other European nations if they fail to cooperate with his administration’s demand regarding Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory.
According to the announcement, the proposed tariffs would initially begin at 10 percent and could rise to as much as 25 percent within months if no agreement is reached. The President justified the move on national security grounds, citing Greenland’s strategic Arctic location and growing global competition in the region.
Trump stated that the policy would affect goods imported from Denmark, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, and Finland. He stressed that the measures would remain in place until what he described as a “satisfactory resolution” is achieved.
European leaders reacted swiftly, rejecting the idea outright. Danish officials reiterated that Greenland is not for sale and emphasised the territory’s right to self-determination. Leaders across Europe warned that using tariffs as leverage could strain long-standing diplomatic and economic relations.
Security analysts noted that Greenland’s strategic importance has increased due to Arctic shipping routes, mineral resources, and military positioning. However, they cautioned that aggressive trade policies could undermine cooperation within NATO and destabilise transatlantic alliances.
