The protest by the retired police officers aimed to demand improved welfare for personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Nigerian Union of Retired Police Officers vowed to picket the National Assembly complex and thereafter move to the Force Headquarters, calling for their immediate removal from the contributory pension scheme.

The Nigerian Union of Retired Police Officers described the pension scheme as “discriminatory”, stating that their members have been dying.
On the other hand, the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) had warned against the protest, calling on the aggrieved retirees to return to the table for negotiations.

The PCRC said the protest was an attempt to discredit the Inspector General of Police, IGP, and the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
