The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for renewed commitment to human-centred education as Nigeria joins the global community to mark the 2026 International Day of Education.

Eko Hot News reports that Senator Tinubu made the call while reflecting on the 2026 theme, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” stressing the need to balance innovation with human values.

She described education as the most powerful tool for acquiring knowledge, creativity, ethical judgment, and values required to thrive in a rapidly evolving, technology-driven world.

The First Lady noted that while artificial intelligence continues to reshape learning and workspaces, humans must remain firmly in control of how technology is designed and deployed.

According to her, technology should serve humanity and support development, rather than diminish human agency or critical thinking.

She emphasised that innovation must be guided by values that sustain society, protect dignity, and promote inclusive growth.

Senator Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to investing in quality and inclusive education that equips children and youth with skills for the future.

The First Lady stressed that education must also nurture compassion, ethics, and creativity alongside digital and technical competencies.

She reaffirmed that preserving human agency in the age of automation is essential for sustainable national development.

According to her, schools and learning systems must prepare young people not only to use AI, but to shape it responsibly.

She called on stakeholders across government, the private sector, and civil society to support policies that strengthen education systems in the digital age.

Senator Tinubu noted that inclusive education remains key to reducing inequality and unlocking Nigeria’s full human potential.

She encouraged educators to embrace innovation while maintaining the core purpose of education as a driver of character and nation-building.

The First Lady wished learners, educators, and stakeholders a meaningful International Day of Education 2026.
