Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has commended the ongoing Lagos Street Art Festival, describing it as a transformative initiative that brings creativity into public spaces and reflects the vibrant spirit of the city.
Eko Hot News reports that the Governor made the remarks during a visit to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Victoria Island, where he inspected large-scale murals created as part of Nigeria’s first major street art festival.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the project demonstrates that art should be accessible to everyone, not confined to galleries, noting that the murals capture Lagos as a bold, expressive and energetic megacity.
The festival, themed “Legendary Lagos: City of Dreams,” features works by local and international artists, transforming blank walls into visual stories of resilience, culture and urban identity.

Organisers said the initiative aims to democratise creativity by using public art to inspire hope and pride within everyday city spaces.
The festival has attracted international attention, with global media outlets highlighting Lagos’ growing influence in contemporary African art.

While many residents praised the murals for beautifying the city and enriching daily commutes, others raised concerns online about waste management, road conditions and safety in some areas.
The Street Art Festival continues during the festive “Detty December” period, further reinforcing Lagos’ status as a leading cultural and creative hub in Africa.
