Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has presented the 2026 “Budget of Shared Prosperity” to the Lagos State House of Assembly, outlining renewed commitments to sustainability, climate resilience, and a cleaner, more liveable Lagos.

Eko Hot News reports that the budget strengthens the administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ agenda, with a strong focus on environmental protection, drainage expansion, waste management reforms, water security and clean energy adoption across the state.

According to the governor, Lagos achieved major progress in 2025 through large-scale drainage rehabilitation and flood prevention efforts. The state opened blocked canals, restored major flood channels, and intensified stormwater maintenance in vulnerable communities. These interventions, described as some of the biggest in Lagos’ history, continue to safeguard lives, property, and businesses during heavy rainfall.

To enhance sanitation and address rising waste volumes, LAWMA expanded its operational capacity by deploying new trucks, increasing compactor fleets, and distributing over 3,000 bins across commercial districts. The Blue Box Recycling Programme also gained momentum, with more households embracing waste sorting. Lagos further strengthened air-quality monitoring by installing modern sensors citywide to better track pollution and prevent public health risks.

Greening and beautification efforts received a boost as LASPARK completed multiple projects across parks, intersections, and public spaces—enhancing aesthetics and promoting healthier urban living.

A key achievement highlighted in the report is the near-completion of the Adiyan Phase II Water Treatment Plant, expected to produce 70 million gallons of potable water daily. Once operational, it will significantly improve water supply for Lagos’ rapidly expanding population.

Sanwo-Olu Boosts 2026 Environment Plan

With a dedicated ₦236 billion allocation to the environment sector in the 2026 budget, the state plans to scale up climate-smart programmes. These include expanding drainage networks, strengthening recycling systems, advancing renewable energy initiatives such as clean cookstoves, and incentivising communities through Waste-to-Cash schemes.

Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s determination to build a greener, safer, and more resilient Lagos—one where environmental sustainability becomes a shared commitment among government, households, and businesses.
