New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has released a new public advisory video outlining residents’ rights during encounters with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), following a recent attempted raid in Manhattan.
Eko Hot News reports that the video responds to renewed concerns over immigration enforcement in the city, highlighting Mamdani’s commitment to defending immigrant communities and protecting New Yorkers’ constitutional rights.

In the video, Mamdani referenced an ICE operation last weekend targeting immigrants in Manhattan. He said his administration would work to shield the city’s three million immigrants from harmful federal actions. He stressed that “standing up to ICE begins with knowing your rights.”
He explained that ICE agents cannot enter homes, schools or private workplaces without a judicial warrant. Mamdani urged residents to decline entry if agents present administrative warrants, noting that such documents do not permit forced access.

Mamdani warned that ICE agents may provide misleading information. He advised residents to remain silent if unsure and to repeatedly ask, “Am I free to go?” when detained. He also emphasised the right to film ICE officers during encounters, provided filming does not interfere with ongoing operations.
The mayor-elect urged residents to remain calm, avoid resistance and comply physically while asserting their legal rights verbally. He said maintaining composure is essential during any law enforcement interaction.

Mamdani reaffirmed New Yorkers’ constitutional right to protest, promising that his administration would defend peaceful demonstrations. He said the city would continue to welcome immigrants and support their safety and dignity.
The video follows Mamdani’s recent meeting with President Donald Trump, during which they discussed affordability and city challenges. Despite the dialogue, the mayor-elect reiterated New York’s sanctuary city policies and pledged to protect residents from deportations unrelated to serious crimes.
He maintained that the city must safeguard immigrants who contribute to its communities and ensure they can live without fear of unjust detention or removal.
