Thousands of demonstrators flooded the streets of Copenhagen on Saturday to protest comments by U.S. President Donald Trump expressing interest in acquiring Greenland. Protesters marched from City Hall to the U.S. Embassy, waving Greenlandic flags and chanting slogans opposing any attempt to take over the Arctic territory.

Many protesters wore red caps modelled after Trump’s “Make America Great Again” hats but altered with messages mocking U.S. territorial ambitions. The creative display underscored both frustration and defiance among demonstrators who insisted Greenland’s future must be decided by its people alone.
Speakers at the rally criticised Trump’s claim that Greenland is strategically vulnerable to Russian and Chinese influence. Protesters argued that such assertions were exaggerated and used to justify inappropriate foreign pressure on an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Greenlanders present at the protest said the remarks felt deeply personal. They emphasised that Greenland is not a commodity and warned that treating the island as a geopolitical asset undermines indigenous rights and self-determination.
The protest followed a recent visit by a bipartisan U.S. delegation to Denmark aimed at calming tensions sparked by Trump’s comments. Despite the diplomatic outreach, public opposition in Denmark appears to be intensifying.
Demonstrators also expressed concern about broader implications for international relations. Several warned that aggressive territorial rhetoric could strain NATO alliances and destabilise long-standing diplomatic norms.
Some participants questioned the lack of widespread protests within the United States, urging Americans to challenge rhetoric they believe threatens global cooperation. They called for respect, dialogue, and adherence to international law.
Observers described the rally as one of Copenhagen’s largest political demonstrations in recent years. The size of the protest highlighted strong European resistance to any suggestion of U.S. control over Greenland.
As chants echoed through the city, protesters delivered a clear message: Greenland’s autonomy is non-negotiable. Any attempt to revisit its status, they warned, would face unified and sustained opposition.
