The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) has inaugurated a Fire Marshal Club and conducted a Safety Walk to strengthen community participation in fire prevention and emergency response across the state.

Eko Hot News reports that the awareness walk commenced from the Service Headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja, through the Ikeja Fire Station, and returned to the headquarters. The initiative aimed to sensitise residents on fire safety and promote proactive community involvement.

Speaking at the event, the Controller General, Margaret Adeseye, noted that although fire incidents remain a concern, there has been a slight reduction in recorded cases between 2024 and 2025.

She stressed that fire outbreaks can be minimised through collective responsibility and strict adherence to safety measures.

Adeseye described the Fire Marshal system as a globally recognised, community-based volunteer structure.

She said establishing Fire Marshal Clubs in markets, commercial centres, and neighbourhoods would enhance emergency preparedness.

According to her, members of the Club will receive adequate training to prevent fire outbreaks and respond effectively during emergencies. The initiative is designed to bridge gaps between communities and professional responders.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Command and Control Centre, Mr Femi Giwa, emphasised the importance of inter-agency collaboration. He noted that trained Fire Marshals would serve as key links to emergency services through toll-free numbers.

Fire safety expert Dr Julius Agbo commended the programme, stating that most fire incidents result from unsafe human actions. He called for sustained public education to drive behavioural change.

The inauguration underscores the Lagos State Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through prevention, partnership, and improved emergency response mechanisms.
