The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has celebrated female street sanitation workers and staff members with health screening and recognition awards to commemorate International Women’s Day 2026.
Eko Hot News reports that the event took place at the LAWMA headquarters in Ijora Olopa and brought together hundreds of female street sweepers and staff members to appreciate their dedication to environmental sanitation across Lagos State.
Speaking during the programme, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the initiative was organised to recognise the resilience and commitment of women working within the agency.

He noted that female sanitation workers play a vital role in maintaining environmental cleanliness across Lagos communities. According to him, their daily contributions help keep the city safe, clean and comfortable for residents.
Gbadegesin explained that the celebration featured free health screening for sanitation workers and other female staff. The initiative was designed to encourage preventive healthcare and promote the well-being of workers within the agency.
The LAWMA boss praised the female workforce for their dedication and hard work. He described them as resilient individuals whose contributions remain important to the operations of the authority.
He added that the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, appreciates the efforts of sanitation workers in keeping the environment clean.

According to him, the state government has also approved a health insurance policy for street sweepers. The policy will allow workers to access medical services under the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme.
Gbadegesin stated that the insurance cards would be ready for distribution within a few weeks. He explained that the policy would cover all 16,000 street sweepers currently working across the state.
The Managing Director also encouraged the sanitation workers to prioritise their health through regular check-ups and proper personal care. He further urged them to support the education and empowerment of their children.

Several organisations partnered with LAWMA to support the celebration. Among them was Agatem Pharmaceuticals, which provided medical supplies and drugs for the health screening exercise.
Other partners included Toleram Group, which donated food items to the sanitation workers, and Waste Care, which provided financial support for the workers as a token of appreciation.
As part of the programme, five outstanding female street sweepers received awards and gifts. The recognition highlighted their dedication, discipline and consistent service to the agency.

Two sanitation workers, Mary Omoyosi and Taiwo Azeez, spoke on behalf of their colleagues during the event.
They expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government and LAWMA management for prioritising the welfare of sanitation workers. They also appreciated the timely payment of salaries and the continued efforts to improve staff well-being.
The celebration concluded with renewed appreciation for the important role female sanitation workers play in maintaining environmental cleanliness across Lagos State. Officials noted that their contributions remain essential to the city’s sustainability and public health.
