The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) recorded 1,023 cases of illegal dumping and related waste violations across Lagos.

Eko Hot News reports that 447 offenders were referred for prosecution as part of intensified enforcement measures to curb environmental abuse.

A breakdown of the figures shows that 230 males and 217 females were sent for legal action, representing 51 per cent and 49 per cent respectively.

LAWMA’s surveillance operations also identified 431 illegal scavengers operating without authorisation across different parts of the state.

The agency reconciled 145 properties with their assigned Private Sector Participant operators to ensure compliance with approved waste collection systems.

According to the report, most illegal dumping incidents occurred between midnight and the early hours of the morning.

Residential waste, construction debris and hazardous materials ranked among the most common offences recorded.

LAWMA noted that the statistics reflect an intensified enforcement strategy that has extended into 2026.

Officers from the Waste Surveillance, Investigation and Enforcement unit have sustained monitoring operations at known black spots.

Earlier this year, officials intercepted and seized waste carts used by unregulated collectors on Lagos Island.

In a related operation, an individual was arrested for dumping refuse near Tinubu Square during early morning hours.

The agency also uncovered an unauthorised dumpsite along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway.

Several cart pushers were arrested for alleged involvement in illegal waste disposal at the site.

Speaking on the enforcement drive, LAWMA Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said operations would be sustained.

He stated that the agency is strategically deploying operatives to eradicate persistent black spots and prevent renewed abuse of cleared areas.

Gbadegesin emphasised that public education, enforcement and prosecution remain central pillars of LAWMA’s mandate.

He urged residents to dispose of waste through authorised channels and patronise registered PSP operators.

The LAWMA boss also encouraged Lagosians to report illegal dumping through official agency platforms.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a cleaner and healthier Lagos through consistent monitoring and strict compliance enforcement.
