The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has reiterated its prohibition of night-time travel on all inland waterways to safeguard lives and property. The warning comes ahead of increased waterway activities during the weekend.

Eko Hot News reports that both commercial and private boat operators are required to operate strictly during daylight hours. Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, Special Adviser on Blue Economy to the Lagos State Governor, emphasised that travel after sunset increases the risk of accidents due to limited visibility and navigation hazards.

The advisory specifically cautioned visitors heading to Ilashe Beach for a scheduled concert by Fuji musician Alhaji Sule Alao Malaika. LASWA urged the public to plan trips carefully and avoid water travel after dark.

Enforcement officers from LASWA, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), and other safety agencies have been tasked with patrolling Lagos waterways to ensure full compliance. Violators of the ban could face legal consequences.

Boat operators were reminded to uphold safety protocols, including ensuring all passengers wear life jackets and adhering to authorised operating hours. The authority emphasised that these measures are critical to preventing accidents.

Emmanuel stated that LASWA remains committed to maintaining a safe and regulated water transport system in Lagos. The advisory highlights that safety is a shared responsibility between operators and passengers alike.

The authority also encouraged residents to report any illegal nighttime operations. LASWA reassured the public that continued enforcement would protect both commuters and commercial operators.

Officials clarified that the ban does not affect daytime travel, which remains fully operational under regulated conditions. Travelers were advised to check for updates and follow official LASWA guidance before using waterways.

LASWA reiterated that all stakeholders, including private boat owners, commercial operators, and recreational users, must strictly comply with the ban. This ensures the prevention of avoidable accidents on Lagos waterways.

The Lagos State Government continues to support LASWA’s safety initiatives, aiming to create a reliable and secure water transport network across the state.
